Tennis Competes at Middle Georgia Invitational
The Brenau tennis team had a strong showing at the Middle Georgia Fall Invitational in this past weekend in Macon, Georgia.
"This is the earliest we've ever played in the fall," said head coach Andre Ferreria. "But I liked the opportunity to get meaningful match play early to tell us exactly where we are starting off the season as individuals and as a team. It also allows the new players to experience college tennis and set more realistic goals moving forward."
In highly competitive field of regional teams, including host Middle Georgia State, Young Harris (Ga.) College, Lee (Tn.) University, Berry (Ga.) College, and Coastal Georgia, the Golden Tigers posted a singles record of 10-7 and a doubles record of 5-2.
Singles highlights include Brenau's Peeraya Charoensirisutthikul defeating Young Harrris' Oriana Labaqui 8-1, Rebecca Pijls defeating Middle Georgia's Franziscka Nobis 8-5 and Valentina Pabon slipping past Middle Georgia's Laura Cocoma 8-5.
Newcomer Evelyn Gouveia had an outstanding weekend as she was the only player to go undefeated in both singles and doubles play. The Sao Paulo, Brazil native overwhelmed Lee University player Lauren Good, 6-4, 6-0, then cruised past Coastal Georgia's Paige DeLaPierre 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinals. In the finals, she defeated Paola Beneyto (MGA) 6-2, 6-1 to earn Flight C Champion honors.
Newcomer Juana Zambrano also had a strong showing as the Flight B Backdraw Champion and finalist. The Lima, Peru native defeated Daniela Nino (MGA) 8-5, and then surpassed teammate Valentina Pabon 8-0 to claim the Flight C Championship.
