Tennis Has Strong Showing at ITA Regionals
Lawrenceville, Georgia-Two Brenau tennis players won the ITA South Regional Doubles Championship hosted by Georgia Gwinnett College this past weekend.
Peeraya Charoensirisutthikul and Rebecca Pijls won the doubles tournament in a deep and talented field and will advance to the ITA Cup Championships at Berry College in Rome, Georgia on October 11-14.
Entering the tournament as an unseeded team, the pairing won four matches en route to the championship- including dispatching the #1 seeded pairing of Madeline Bosnjak/Ceire Mullins from host Georgia Gwinnett in the semifinals.
In the finals, the duo defeated another Georgia Gwinnett pairing, Gabrielle Robinson/Maria Prados Sid, 8-5 to capture the doubles title. The pairing also earned the right to advance to the ITA Cup where they will compete against the top teams from all seven NAIA regions.
In singles play, Kirsten Dickins also had a strong tournament as the senior defeated Reinhardt University's Glauka Carvajal (4-6, 6-4, 10-5) in the opening round and SCAD-Atlanta's Katrina De Guzman (6-3, 6-4) in the second round before falling to Georgia Gwinnett's Maria Prados Cid in the quarterfinals.
The last Brenau player to qualify for the ITA Cup was Dominika Jasova in 2013, who placed fifth in singles competition.
