#5 Tennis Slips Against #10 SCAD-Savannah
Savannah, Ga.- The #5 Brenau tennis team fell to #10 SCAD-Savannah 5-4 in a hard fought contest between two nationally ranked teams on Friday.
The Golden Tigers took an early 2-1 advantage with wins at #1 and #3 doubles. However, the Bees opened singles play with a victory at #4 singles as Valerie Droop defeated Kirsten Dickins 6-2, 6-0 to even the match at 2-2. Brenau answered as Juana Zambrano defeated Johanna Weber 6-4, 6-0 to give her team a 3-2 advantage through five matches.
The heated competition continued with a split at #1 and #2 singles, and then a Bees victory at #6 singles evened the match at 4-4. In the final match, the Bees' Nicole Katzarkov outlasted Evelin Gouveia 6-3, 5-7, 7-6(2) to clinch the win.
"It was such a hard fought match from the first point in doubles until the last point in singles," said head coach Andre Ferreira. "SCAD Savannah has a solid team and we hung in there, fought and came short by a slim margin."
"We are coming to the end of our regular season with four more matches to go, including the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 ranked teams in the AAC. We will focus on ways to maintain and elevate our team level to finish the regular season on a strong note."
Brenau (6-5 overall, 5-0 AAC) continues its rigorous schedule with a non-conference matchup against Furman University on Sunday at 3:30 pm in Greenville, SC.
