Tennis Clinches Second Consecutive AAC Championship
Gainesville, Ga. - The #12 Brenau tennis team clinched its second consecutive Appalachian Athletic Conference championship with a 6-3 win over #20 SCAD-Atlanta at the Lessie Smithgall Tennis Center on Friday.
"This was another good performance by our team today," said head coach Andre Ferreira. "I feel that our consistency in the last two weeks has been our biggest strength as a team. I was particularly excited for Kirsten (Dickins) and Rebecca (Pijls) today - our two seniors."
The victory clinched the conference team title over Union College as the Golden Tigers went undefeated in conference play for the second consecutive year.
In doubles play, the Golden Tigers took a 2-1 lead as the pairing of Peeraya Charoensirisutthikul and Rebecca Pijls defeated the Bees' Katrina De Guzman and Simran Kejriwal 8-3 at #1 singles, while the pairing of Juana Zambrano and Valentina Pabon cruised past Giulianna Hull and Madelyn Homan 8-3 at #3 singles.
In individual play, the Golden Tigers' momentum continued as Kirsten Dickins won her #4 singles match over Emilia Smythe 6-2, 6-1 and Juana Zambrano defeated Vivian Amaro 6-2, 6-0 at #3 singles for a commanding 4-1 lead.
Sophomore Peeraya Charoensirisutthikul then clinched the match and the team title with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Katrina De Guzman at #2 singles.
"I am happy our team finished the regular season with a strong performance against a tough SCAD Atlanta and I am particularly happy for our seniors as they will always remember this moment," said Ferreira.
"We are looking forward to preparing for the AAC tournament in a couple of weeks."
Brenau (9-6 overall, 8-0 AAC) finishes the regular season with a home non-conference match against Piedmont College on April 14th at 2 pm at the Lessie Smithgall Tennis Center.
