Tennis Splits in Appalachian Athletic Conference Competition
Gainesville, Georgia- The #6 Brenau tennis team split a pair of matches this week as the squad defeated Point (Ga.) University and fell to #17 Tennessee Wesleyan in Appalachian Athletic Conference play this past week.
Against Point, the squad used strong doubles play to roll through the host Skyhawks early and then win three straight singles matches to close out the match. At #4 singles, Golden Tigers' sophomore Bianca Andersen won over Joanna Gallman 6-0, 6-1, and then at # 6 singles, freshman Sally Brannon swept Tania Herrera 6-0, 6-2. Fellow freshman MaryWynn Brannon then closed out the match with a decisive 6-2, 6-2 win over the Bulldogs' Lisa McKenzie.
In the matchup against Tennessee Wesleyan, the Golden Tigers swept doubles play 3-0, but the visiting Bulldogs edged past the home team in singles competition by winning four of the five singles matches. The lone singles winner for Brenau was at #6 singles where freshman MaryWynn Brannon defeated Maria Way 6-3, 6-1.
"I am disappointed to lose but TWU was a tough opponent today," said head coach Andre Ferreira. "They fought hard in singles and came back from a set down in the last two courts to beat us. I think we have a very deep conference on the women's side so I am expecting several more tough AAC matches throughout the season."
Brenau (1-1 overall, 1-1 AAC) continues its tough slate when the squad takes on #11 Indiana Wesleyan University on Friday in Canton, Ga.
