Track Opens Indoor Season at BSC Invitational
Birmingham, Alabama- Members of the Brenau indoor track and field team competed at the Birmingham Southern Panther Invitational this past weekend.
Freshman Shatrice Dixon made an impact in her first meet as a Golden Tiger with a fifth place finish in the long jump. The Sandersville, Georgia native leaped 5.43 meters, which was only .04 meters short of the national qualifying standard.
Two different relay teams also showed well as the 4000 meter distance medley relay team and the 4 x 400 relay team had a strong meet. The distance medley relay squad of Juliette Rios, Gloria Clark, Keri Ashworth and Bianca Orr also raced to a fifth place finish with a time of 14:43, while the 4 x 400 relay team of Ayana Daniels, Nia Griffin, Gloria Clark, Kanyisola Anjorin took seventh place in a highly competitive field in 4:19.39.
Other top performers include freshman Shakera Thompson who qualified for nationals in both the 60 meter dash (7.81) and the 200 meter dash (25.80) and sophomore Deeanna Joseph, who broke her own school record in the weight throw with a toss of 12.69 meters.
"Llike any track meet, this meet had its ups and downs but mostly we trended up with many qualifiers and near-qualifiers and a whole bunch of personal records," said head coach Byron Kramer. "We are making good progress toward making our presence felt in both the conference and at nationals this year."
The Golden Tigers will return to the indoor track at the JDL Invitational in Winston Salem, North Carolina on January 13th.
