Track Qualifiers Show Well at Nationals
At the NAIA Track and Field National Championships, Deishane' Honeycutt, DeMichia Higgins and Olamide Sokunbi showed well in their respective events.
For the Golden Tigers, these three athletes represented the first national qualifiers in the history of the program.
Honeycutt, the SSAC Track Athlete of the Year, finished ninth in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:02.80. Seeded 31st coming into the national meet, the sophomore was .04 seconds short of eighth place, which would have qualified her for All-American status.
In the 100 hurdles, Higgins qualified in 24th place, but finished in 14th place overall with a time of 14.88. The national championship appearance capped off a standout season for the freshman who was also the SSAC champion in the event.
Sokunbi finished 27th in the 200 meter dash in 26.12. The Marietta, Georgia native wrapped up her outstanding season as both the reigning SSAC champion and SSAC record holder in the event.
"Our goal this year was to make it to Nationals and for us to improve our national standing was very important", said head coach Rick Ludwig. "Our team had a goal of making it to Nationals this fall and I am very proud to have sent our first national qualifiers!"
