Track Places Seventh At Emory Invitational
The Brenau track and field team placed seventh overall and set three new school records at the Emory Invitational in Atlanta this past weekend.
The Golden Tigers scored 39.5 points in a highly competitive field of 26 teams in a strong showing. NCAA Division I Jacksonville (Fla.) State finished first with 100.5 points.
Kaitlyn Gearing (FR/Sautee Nacoochee, Ga.) set a new school record in the javelin (108'6") with a seventh place finish, while Elena Oslund (JR/Albany, Ga.) placed ninth set her own school record in the 1500 meter run (18:45.28). Jasmine Ray (JR/Bowling Green, Ky.) added to the records in the 800 meter dash (2:24.76), which placed tenth overall.
Other top eight scoring finishers include:
Brianna Archer (FR/Covington, Ga.) - 3rd- 400 meter dash (58.48);
Dana Cole (JR/West Palm Beach, Fla.) - 2nd - Discus - 137' 4";
Devony Hemingway (SR/Salemburg, N.C.) - 8th, High jump;
DeMichia Higgins (SO/Duluth, Ga.) - 7th - 100 high hurdles;
Deishane' Honeycutt (JR/Stone Mountain, Ga.) - 6th - 400 hurdles (106.27);
Yasmine Reynolds (FR/Quitman, Ga.) – 5th-200 meter dash (25.66) and 8th-100 meter dash (12.42);
Olamide Sokunbi (JR/Marietta, Ga.) - 3rd - 100 meter dash (12.10);
The Golden Tigers also had two relay teams show well at the Invitational. The 4 x 100 relay team of Reynolds, Sokunbi, Cheyenne Wells (SO/Sandy Springs, Ga.) and Ismaelle Occeus (SO/Lawrenceville, Ga.) finished in sixth place in 49.69, while the 4 x 800 relay team of Monika Nwajei (SO/Dunwoody, Ga.), Honeycutt, Archer and Ray placed fourth in 10:01.42.
Sokunbi's 100 meter dash time also qualified her for the NAIA National Championships in Gulf Shores, Alabama on May 21-23.
"The beautiful weather and excellent competition really motivated everyone to compete well," said head coach Rick Ludwig. "We had a few mishaps and injuries, but hopefully they will be minor. Everyone really fought hard and encouraged each other to do their best and I am very proud of our team."
Brenau continues their season on Saturday when the squad travels to Rome, Georgia for the Shorter Relays.
