Track Athletes Head to National Championships
Seven members of the Brenau track and field team will compete at the 2015 NAIA Outdoor National Championships in Gulf Shores, Alabama from May 21-23.
Five athletes will be competing in eight different events, while one relay team will run at the championships.
Dana Cole (JR/West Palm Beach, Fla.), the 2015 Southern States Athletic Conference Field Athlete of the Year will be competing in the discus throw. DeMichia Higgins (SO/Duluth, Ga.) qualified for the 100 hurdles, while Deishane' Honeycutt (JR/Stone Mountain, Ga.) will run in the 400 hurdles.
Freshman Yasmine Reynolds (FR/Quitman, Ga.) will run in both the 100 and 200 meters, while Olamide Sokunbi (JR/Marietta, Ga.) will run in the 100 meters and take on the triple jump. Cheyenne Wells (SO/Sandy Springs, Ga.) will also line up for the 100 meters.
Ismaelle Occeus (SO/Lawrenceville, Ga.), Higgins, Reynolds, Sokunbi and Wells make up the 4 x 100 meter relay, which is seeded seventh in the preliminary races.
Higgins, Honeycutt and Sokunbi each competed in the 2014 national championships and are making their second visit to the championships.
Seven athletes marks the highest number of national qualifiers for the Brenau track team, who recently captured their third SSAC championship.
