Track Dominates Birmingham Southern Invitational
The Brenau track team had another outstanding showing by winning at the Birmingham Southern Invitational track meet this past weekend.
The Golden Tigers amassed 138.5 points to easily win the meet. University of Montevallo (Ala.) placed second with 79.5 points. Clark-Atlanta University finished third, while Albion (Mich.) and host Birmingham Southern (Ala.) University rounded out the top five.
The meet was highlighted by Dana Cole's meet record in the discus. The reigning SSAC champion won the event by over seven meters with a throw of 43.74.
Olamide Sokunbi also had a standout day, qualifying for the NAIA nationals by winning the triple jump (11.53m). The senior also won the 200 meters (25.74), placed second in the 100 meters (12.43), fifth in the long jump (5.14m) and also ran in both the 4x400 and 4x100 relays.
Cheyenne Wells scored in all of her events as the Sandy Springs, Ga. native placed third in the 100 meters (12.44), second in the 200 meters (25.95), eighth in the 100 hurdles (17.57), sixth in the long jump (5.06) and was a key component of both the 4x400 and 4x100 relays.
Aubrey Fearnow also had a solid day for the Golden Tigers, placing fourth in the discus (35.36m), 12th in the shotput (10.35m) and 11th in the hammer throw (31.56m).
Jasmine Ray won the steeplechase (12.42.69) and placed seventh in the 800 meters (2:24.22), while Deishane' Honeycutt also placed fourth in the 400 meters (59.01).
The 4x100 team of Sokunbi, Wells, Honeycutt and Amber Curney narrowly missed national qualifying by 0.01 seconds and placed third in 48.33. The 4x400 team of Wells, Honeycutt, Ayana Daniels and Nia Griffin also placed third in 4:05.26.
Other top finishers include Hunter Creswell, second place, pole vault (3.20m), Anazjah Mayes, eighth place, 400 meters, (1:01.24) and Ismaelle Occeus, eighth place, triple jump (10.72)
Brenau next travels to the Emory (Ga.) Classic on March 18th and 19th.
