Brenau Remains Undefeated With Comeback Win Over Piedmont

Demorest, GA- The Brenau Golden Tigers volleyball team continued their winning ways tonight with a come from behind four-set victory over Piedmont College to push their season record to 6-0. Not only is this team off to their best start in school history, but they also defeated Piedmont for the first time ever.Piedmont came out strong and the Tigers got off to a slow start in the first game, with the home team winning 25-20 in a game that wasn't as close as the final score. Brenau regrouped in the next one, winnning 25-15 behind the play of Senior Co-Captain Audra VanArsdale, who came up with 43 assists, five digs and five blocks on the night, and Sophomore phenom Alexis Arthur, who tied her career best with 20 kills in the match. Game three was a real nailbiter, going into overtime with BU pulling out a 27-25 win. The Tigers then stepped up and put the match away with a 25-18 decision in the fourth and final game. Karen Green had another solid performance with nine kills, seven digs, seven receptions, two assists, a block and an ace and her senior teammate Maida Smajic had her normal steady game in the back row with 23 digs and 24 receptions. Kelsey Aley (seven kills and four blocks), Freshman Melissa Thornton (seven kills and a block) and Meredith Hardin (eight blocks, five kills and a dig) also came up big in this match. "When we got down in the first game, we had a chance to show our mental toughness and we started to play more consistently from that point forward, which has been the key for us all along," said Coach Meredith Matthews. Brenau will open SSAC play this Saturday when they travel to Brewton Parker.
