September 17, 2009
Columbia, SC- The Brenau volleyball team (8-1, 1-1) saw their eight game win streak come to a halt tonight as they fell in five games to Columbia College (8-2, 2-1) in SSAC action. Senior setter Audra VanArsdale broke her own school record for assists with 49 (the old record was 48) and added 15 digs, five blocks, two kills and three aces in a brilliant individual performance. The match was a thriller from the beginning with the Tigers breaking out on top in the first game 26-24.Columbia came right back in the second game and took a 25-23 decision, with Brenau returning the favor in game three 25-18 in what was the largest margin of victory in the match. BU thought they had won the match in the fourth game when they scored the 25th point, but it was taken away by the officials for a foot fault. The Koalas seized the opportunity and came back to win 26-24. The strange turn of events seemed to unnerve the Tigers and Columbia charged to an 11-2 lead in the fifth and deciding game before Brenau came roaring back to a 13-12 deficit before losing 15-13. Senior Outside Hitter Karen Green had another outstanding performance with 22 kills, 22 receptions, 14 digs, five blocks and a service ace. Alexis Arthur (18 kills, seven digs and a block), and Maida Smajic (35 receptions, 23 digs and an ace) also had strong performances. Courtney Frady (six digs, five kills, three assists and two blocks), Kelsey Aley (seven blocks, four kills, an assist and a dig), and Kerry Abernathy (13 receptions, six digs and an ace) also contributed.
