Brenau Volleyball Sweeps Toccoa Falls

Gainesville, GA- The Tigers volleyball team (9-1) rebounded quickly from their tough five-game loss at Columbia, SC to sweep past Toccoa Falls tonight in the Brenau gym, 25-22, 25-19, and 25-22. It was another team effort, but Senior Co-Captain Karen Green (Lawrenceville) was outstanding with 21 kills, four aces, two digs and a block. The nine wins represents the most victories since the 2006 season when Brenau won 11 matches. Toccoa put up a better fight than expected and pushed the Tigers in each of the three games, but Brenau's depth eventually won the battle as five different players stepped up to help Green out. Senior Maida Smajic picked up 20 receptions and 10 digs to anchor the back row, and Alexis Arthur had 10 kills to go with two blocks. Freshmen Macy Baugh (seven kills, three blocks) and Melissa Thornton (six kills, two assists and a block) continued to play well and Junior Courtney Frady came up with five kills, five digs, two aces and a block. "We just need to remember that we are here because we love the game and play with the kind of intensity and focus that comes along with that," said Coach Meredith Matthews, who was obviously pleased with the 9-1 start to the season. Next up for Brenau is another home match against Berry next Tuesday, the 22nd at 7 pm.
