Brenau Wins Two at Faulkner

Montgomery, AL- The Brenau volleyball team made history today with two wins at the Faulkner Invitational by defeating Belhaven, MS (10-14) and Spring Hill, MS (5-9) and raise their season record to 13-5. The previous best season win total was 11, set in 2006. The Tigers opened tournament play with a four set victory over Belhaven 21-25, 25-19, 27-25 and 25-22. Courtney Frady (13 receptions, 11 digs, 10 kills, four blocks, four assists and two aces) and Karen Green (15 kills, 13 receptions, 14 digs, six blocks, four aces and three assists) had monster games to lead the way.
They got plenty of help from the likes of Alexis Arthur (12 kills, five blocks, three digs and an assist), Audra VanArsdale (36 assists, 12 digs, four blocks, three aces and two kills) and Maida Smajic (30 digs and 22 receptions). In the second match of the day the Tigers swept past Spring Hill 25-22, 25-21 and 25-22 with a team effort led by Green (15 kills, 13 digs, two assists and two aces). Frady had another solid game with 15 digs, nine kills, seven receptions, four blocks and two assists. Freshman Macy Baugh had a season high nine blocks to go with two kills and two assists and Kelsey Aley came up with 10 blocks, nine kills and two digs. VanArsdale had 34 assists, 10 digs, two blocks and two kills from the setter position and Arthur had another 10 kills. Freshman Patricia Passos stepped up and had 14 digs and 10 receptions from the back row.
"When we are communicating properly, we are a difficult team to beat and for the most part we did that today," said Coach Meredith Matthews. Brenau will take on Martin Methodist, TN at 10 am tomorrow and face off with Southeastern, FL at 2 pm to close out the tournament.
