Tigers Upset Shorter in SSAC Volleyball Action

Rome, GA- The Brenau volleyball team (16-7, 2-5) picked up their biggest win in program history tonight with a thrilling five game victory over Shorter College (20-8, 5-3) in SSAC action. Game scores were 25-18-25-20, 20-25, 18-25 and 17-15. Senior Karen Green had a monster match with a school record 20 kills, 18 receptions, 12 digs, six blocks and two aces as the Tigers knocked the Hawks out of second place in the SSAC.Brenau had not won two conference games in a season since 2003, making this win even more significant. Green had plenty of help with nine different players making contributions in the five game marathon. Fellow seniors Audra VanArsdale (43 assists, 13 digs and four blocks) and Maida Smajic (30 receptions and 22 digs) were also big contributors. Alexis Arthur (14 kills and seven digs), Kelsey Aley (12 blocks and five kills), Kerry Abernathy (21 receptions), and Danelle Russell (15 receptions and eight digs) also stepped up to contribute to the upset. "The first two games were the best volleyball we have played since I have been here. Our defense was huge and we scrapped and fought better than we ever have." said Coach Meredith Matthews. The Tigers came back from a 9-13 deficit in game five to win the match. Next up for Brenau will be an SSAC rematch at Southern Wesleyan Thursday night.
