Florence, SC - Junior Outside Hitter Alexis Arthur had a big day at the Francis Marion Invitational Volleyball Tournament yesterday, recording 30 kills and 15 digs in two matches. The Tigers came up short in both contests, dropping their season record to 0-7, but showed great improvement over their last outing in Texas.
In the first match, Brenau matched up with Erskine, SC and lost in a close one, 25-23, 19-25, 21-25, 23-25. In addition to 14 kills by Arthur, Melissa Thornton had 10 kills and Libero Danelle Russell had 28 receptions and 15 digs. The setters, Kerry Abernathy and Mekenna Cipres had 20 and 15 assists respectively.
In game two, the Tigers took on UNC -Pembroke and waged a thrilling five set match, losing 13-25, 15-25, 27-25, 27-25, 7-15. Arthur turned in another outstanding performance with 16 kills and 10 digs, as did Russell with 43 receptions and 25 digs. Thornton came up with another 11 kills and 11 digs. Abernathy and Cipres assisted 23 and 19 times.
"We continue to have problems with consistency. We will play amazing for a couple of rallies, or a whole game, but then, minutes later, we will just let up and allow our opponents to gain momentum. However, I will say that the 3rd and 4th games against Pembroke is the best I've seen them play all season," said Head Coach Meredith Franklin.
The Tigers will finish up play today with two matches, first against Carson Newman, Tn and the finale with home team Francis Marion.
