Tigers Pick Up First Win of 2010

Montgomery, Al - After playing 11 of 12 matches on the road against quality opponents and coming up short each time, the Brenau volleyball team put it all together today against Faulkner University in the finale of the SSAC Crossover Tournament to pick up their first win of the season. Game scores were 25-13, 24-26, 28-26, 20-25, 15-8 as the Tigers finally put it all together and finished the match with consistent play at the end.
Alexis Arthur continues to lead the way on the offensive end with 14 kills and also came up with 24 receptions and 11 digs. Sophomore setter Kerry Abernathy had 17 assists and her counterpart, Mekenna Cipres had 20 to go with 10 digs. Sophomore Libero was huge with 34 receptions and 19 digs and Senior Courtney Frady had a season high 13 kills to go with seven digs. Patricia Passos had a good day with 19 receptions and 10 digs. Faulkner dropped to 6-6 with the loss and Brenau improved to 1-12.
In the first outing of the day, the Tigers came out flat and lost in three games to Spring Hill by scores of 10-25, 18-25, 7-25. The Badgers, who are 4-1 on the season seized control of the match at the outset and Brenau never got going in their worst loss of the season. Danelle Russell was solid, as usual, with 24 receptions and 22 digs and Melissa Thornton had 10 receptions. Spring Hill's dominance was demonstrated by a 46-19 advantage in kills and a 35-17 edge in assists.
"I have been waiting all season for us to put it all together on offense and defense and we finally made it happen in the Faulkner match," said Coach Meredith Franklin. We have had so many matches that we didn't finish, but this one was a complete effort and we played to win with the contest on the line."
Brenau will open conference play on Tuesday when they take on #4 Lee University at the Tiger Gym with a start time of 7 PM.
