Columbia Outlasts Brenau in Five

Gainesville, Ga - It was a match that would go down to the final point as Columbia, SC and the Brenau Golden Tigers met tonight in SSAC volleyball action at the Tiger Gym. When the dust finally settled, the Fighting Koalas prevailed 25-17, 17-25, 27-25, 20-25, 15-13 to run their conference record to 2-1 and their season mark to 7-6. The Tigers dropped to 1-15, and 0-3.
Sophomore Melissa Thornton had a monster night with a season high 16 kills and 17 digs. She is currently 13th in the conference in kills with 111 on the season. Alexis Arthur also had a big evening with 14 kills and 20 digs and she ranks 6th in the SSAC with 136 kills.
Libero Danelle Russell, who currently leads the conference in digs with 236, added a season best 32 tonight. Setter Kerry Abernathy doled out 24 assists and added 10 digs, while Mekenna Cipres had 20 assists and 10 digs.
It was certainly a match that could have gone either way, as evidenced by the final score and the Tigers don't have long to dwell on the tough loss since they will travel to Southern Wesleyan tomorrow for a 1 pm start time.
