Brenau Volleyball Splits at Conference Crossover
MONTGOMERY, Al - The Brenau University volleyball team traveled to Faulkner University this weekend to compete in the SSAC Crossover Tournament (West Division Series). The Golden Tigers were matched up against Belhaven College and Faulkner University, and ended up splitting this weekend, 1-1. Belhaven defeated Brenau in three straight sets with the scores 16-25, 16-25, and 17-25, however, Brenau quickly regained their focus, and overwhelmed Faulkner, 25-19, 25-19, 17-25, and 25-13.
While Faulkner had home court advantage, Brenau made sure to get a lead from the very beginning. Three out of the four sets, Faulkner trailed behind the Golden Tigers by an average of 5 points.
Melissa Thornton (Woodstock, GA) earned 13 kills, 3 service aces, 8 digs, and 3 blocks against the Eagles. Alexis Arthur (Aiken, SC) and Danelle Russell (Cartersville, GA) both collected 8 kills; Arthur went on to earn 11 digs and 5 stuff blocks, as Russell totaled 1 service ace, 11 digs, and 4 stuff blocks.
After competing this weekend, Coach Meredith Franklin commented, "As a whole, we need to continue to focus on consistency. We have a strong defense, but if we get complacent our opponents take the momentum and run with it. This is the time when we are now entering our conference playwe need to make every play and every point matter."
With the team splitting this weekend, they now have an overall record of 7-3 (1-1 in conference). The Golden Tigers will be back on the road Tuesday, September 20, to play Clark Atlanta University @ 5:30pm.
