The Barons Outlast the Golden Tigers
MOUNT VERNON, Ga - The Brenau University volleyball team traveled to Brewton-Parker College on Friday evening, for their fourth conference match of the season. The Barons overwhelmed the Golden Tigers, with the scores 15-25, 25-20, 30-32, and 22-25. Brenau has dropped their overall record to 8-5 (1-3 in SSAC).
The Golden Tigers battled throughout the match. After Brenau defeated Brewton-Parker in the second set, the third set was immediately filled with tension, as both teams were determined to gain momentum. For the entire set, the two opponents went back and forth; however, the Barons outlasted the Golden Tigers, 32-30. The fourth set began with the same intensity, with both the teams responding back to one another. The Barons did not manage to take the lead until they broke out from the 14-14 tie, which allowed them to win the match.
"We started the game confident, and I saw some major improvements in our team. The players were really aggressive with hitting placements when we needed a point on the board. As for our defense, I believe we did better on adjusting to their offensebut we just need to really strive for consistency still," stated Coach Meredith Franklin.
Junior outside hitter, Danelle Russell (Cartersville, GA) led the Golden Tigers with 14 kills, 1 assist, 13 digs, and a single block. Melissa Thornton (Woodstock, GA) also made a great contribution with 13 kills, 10 digs, and 2 blocks. As for the middles, Alexis Arthur (Aiken, SC) earned 9 kills, 7 digs, and 14 blocks, while Rachel Adam (Athens, GA) collected 7 kills and 6 blocks. Lindsay Kelly (Cumming, GA) had another great defensive game, recording 14 kills for the team.
The volleyball team will get back on the road on Monday, September 26th, as they travel to Shorter University. The conference match is scheduled to start @ 7pm.
