Brenau Volleyball Drops Two Heartbreakers
The Golden Tigers faced another tough opponent last Friday night in SSAC #1 ranked Spring Hill College, narrowly missing the win by two points and losing the match by the scores of 25-20, 25-19, 10-25, 18-25, and 13-15.
Brenau kept Spring Hill within reach with Ellen Lemos (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) contributing 18 kills (a personal high for the season), followed closely by Sydney Koon(Johns Creek, Ga) and Melissa Thornton (Woodstock, Ga), with their 14 kill contribution. Danelle Russell (Cartersville, Ga) also recorded 15 digs while Mekenna Cipres (Murietta, Ca) led the team with 48 assists. The team fought until the final whistle but could not overcome their 12 service errors.
Brenau continued its Alabama tour, playing SSAC foe Mobile University on Saturday. The volleyball team barely missed the win- once again losing by a two point margin: 25-22, 19-25, 25-23, 23-25, 13-15.
The offense gave the Rams all they could handle with Thornton leading the team with 16 kills and 19 digs. Russell and Koon each contributed 15 and 14 kills respectively, with 14 digs each. The offense was led by senior setter Mekenna Cipres who brought 53 assists to the table (a new season high). The Golden Tigers laid everything out on the floor but they could not overcome Mobile's top scorer, senior Kiara Gay, who accumulated 30 kills during the match.
Brenau looks to rebound from these tough loses next Tuesday when they get a second shot at SSAC rival, Lee University, with the home court advantage. Brenau University is currently 12-7 overall and 4-5 in the competitive SSAC. Match time is scheduled for 7pm at the East Hall Community Center.
