Koon Named SSAC Volleyball Player of the Week
MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Sydney Koon has been selected as the SSAC Volleyball Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. The senior outside hitter was chosen for her performance during the week of Oct. 27-Nov. 2. As the conference selection, Koon will be automatically nominated for the NAIA Volleyball National Player of the Week award.
Koon led Brenau to a 3-0 week, with wins over Montreat (N.C.) (25-18, 25-20, 25-16), Bethel (Tenn.) (25-20, 24-26, 25-15, 25-22) and Martin Methodist (Tenn.) (25-19, 25-16, 25-12). With the wins, the Golden Tigers move to third in the SSAC standings behind No. 25 Coastal Georgia and Mobile (Ala.).
Koon, a native of Johns Creek, Ga., recorded double-doubles in each of Brenau's contests this week with double-digit kills and digs in each match.
Against Montreat, she had 16 kills and 11 digs to lead the team in both categories. Against Bethel, she again led the team in kills with 17 and ranked second on the team in digs with 15. In the final match of the week against Martin Methodist, Koon once again paced the Golden Tigers with 18 kills and 12 digs.
On the week, Koon tallied 51 kills on 88 attacks to average 5.10 kills per set and earn a .500 hitting percentage. She also added 38 digs, three blocks and three assists.
The outside hitter leads the SSAC in kills per set (3.53) and ranks among the conference leaders in kills (4th, 300), digs per set (11th, 3.14), digs (13th, 267), hitting percentage (18th, .189) and assists per set (20th, .49).
Koon is the first player to earn multiple SSAC Volleyball Player of the Week awards in 2014, having been previously honored on Sept. 29.
