Volleyball Cruises Past Truett in Three Sets
The Brenau volleyball team put together a complete team effort with a three-set victory over conference rival Truett McConnell (Ga.) College on Friday in Gainesville.
After getting overwhelmed 25-11 in the first set, the visiting Bears responded with a 16-11 lead in the second set. The Golden Tigers answered the challenge with their own rally to tie the set 21-21. Setter Savannah Wilbanks earned one of her game-high 29 assists as she found freshman Karlee Moss for the go ahead kill to give Brenau their first lead of the set. Kills by Patience Thurmond and Atiana Lewis closed out the set 25-23 to give the home team a 2-0 lead.
In the third set, Brenau led by as many as 11 points and never trailed as the Bears struggled to find any consistency in the offensive attack. With a commanding 24-14 lead, Jordan Diaz set fellow freshman Delanie Smith for her first kill of the match to seal the victory and give the Golden Tigers their third conference win of the season.
Moss led all players with 13 kills as the Golden Tigers outhit the Bears with a .175 to -0.59 hitting percent for the match. Savannah Combs led the team with 10 digs, while Diaz chipped in 7 digs in the win.
Shayla Smith led Truett McConnell with seven kills.
Brenau (3-13 overall, 2-3 AAC) starts a four-match week with a home date against Allen (SC) University on Tuesday at 6:30 in Gainesville.
