Volleyball Runs Past Allen In Five Sets
The Brenau volleyball outlasted Allen (SC) College in a five-set thriller to earn their third conference win of the season on Tuesday in Gainesville.
In a back and forth battle, the Yellow Jackets came out aggressive and won the first set 25-20, however, the Golden Tigers answered with a strong 25-18 second set victory to even the match 1-1. The visitors responded with another 25-20 score to take the third set and a 2-1 lead.
The hotly contested fourth frame had neither team gaining more than a two-point lead at any point in the set. With the score at 22-22, Nitaira Wilkes set freshman Delanie Smith for her first kill of the match to give the Golden Tigers a one-point lead. After a block from Taliyah Mose-Manning and Haley Ponder increased the Brenau lead to 24-22, Allen answered with a kill to narrow the score to 24-23. However, an error by Andjela Cutovic ended the Yellow Jacket comeback and evened the match at 2-2.
In the final set, the Golden Tigers dominated the set to run away with a 15-7 victory.
Karlee Moss led Brenau with 22 kills, while Nicole Ighile added a season-high 11 kills. Atiana Lewis also added nine kills, while Wilkes and Savannah Wilbanks combined for 47 assists in the win.
The Golden Tigers outhit the Yellow Jackets .244 to .202 and committed 10 less errors in the match.
Brenau (4-13 overall, 3-3 AAC) next travels to Middle Georgia State University on Tuesday for a 7 pm non-conference matchup in Macon, Ga.
