March 26, 2010
Gainesville, Ga- Junior cross country runner Audra Cochran (Stockbridge) is having quite an off-season, not only as an athlete but also for her accomplishments in the academic world. Cochran ran the Charles Harris 10K on Feb. 27 and won her age group with a time of 41:48, which also placed her in 12th place out of 588 women. She now holds the fastest time as a Tiger runner participating in that race. One week later, she ran the Chattahoochee Road Runners 5K and again won her age group with a time of 19:42, which placed her 2nd out of 90 women.
In addition to these two accomplishments, Cochran has won two summer research scholarships to Emory University. Biology Chair Randy May announced that she is one of only 20 students to win an extremely competitive Summer Undergraduate Research Program at Emory award which is funded by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and carries a stipend of $3,000. She also won a B.R.A.I.N Award in neuroscience summer research at Emory.
In addition to all this, she is studying for the MCAT, taking a prep course in Atlanta three days a week. Audra also tutors at the writing center and volunteered at the Good News Clinic in Gainesville last fall. "Audra is leaving a huge mark at Brenau for other students to strive to acheive," said Cross Country Coach Susan McIntyre.
