Cross Country Takes Fifth at SSAC Championships

The Brenau cross country team placed fifth at the 2016 Southern States Athletic Conference Cross Country championships in Varnell, Ga. on Friday.

The Golden Tigers had a team time of 1:51:27 and an average time of 22:18 to place ahead of Loyola (La.), Mobile (Ala.), Middle Georgia State and Brewton Parker.

Sophomore Michelle Velazquez led the squad with a 16^th place finish (20:52), while seniors Monika Nwajei (22:20) and Anazjah Mayes (22:27) finished close together in 25^th and 26^th place respectively.

Nia Griffin (28^th place/22:42), Giovanna Sifontes (30^th/23:06), Sydney Romine (31^st/23:06) and Elizabeth Lowe (39^th/24:33) also showed well at the championships.

For Mayes, the 22:27 marked a personal record (PR), while Lowe and Sifontes both earned season PRs.

The finish marked the fifth straight year the Golden Tigers have placed fifth or higher at the SSAC Championships.

Blue Mountain (Miss.) won the meet with an average time of 19:51, while Dalton State (Ga.), William Carey (Miss.) and Bethel (Tenn.) rounded out the top four.
