Gainesville, Georgia The Brenau softball team swept Truett McConnell (Ga.) University 10-8 and 8-7 in an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) doubleheader on Tuesday.
In the opener, the Golden Tigers offense used a five-run fifth inning and pounded out 16 hits en route to a 10-8 victory.
Down 7-4 going into the bottom of the fifth inning, junior Allie Busbee singled to score Kristina Peach and Peyton Hawkins to cut the deficit to one. Consecutive singles by freshman Malorie Watson and junior Charlotte Smith gave the Golden Tigers a 8-7 lead, then sophomore Ava Moon added a third consecutive single to score Smith and give the home team a 9-7 advantage.
The visiting Bears rallied in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 9-8, however, Busbee launched her third homer of the season to give Brenau the insurance run and the 10-8 victory.
In the second game of the afternoon, Brenau jumped out to an early 8-1 lead, however, Truett McConnell (20-9 overall, 11-4 AAC) responded with seven unanswered runs, but ultimately came up short in an 8-7 loss.
Moon continued her stellar day with two hits and three RBIs, while Hawkins, Charlotte Smith and junior Riley Smith each added two hits to the victory.
Freshman Emily Hall posted her 10th win of the season by scattering five hits and allowing only two runs. Truett's Rachel Morgan threw 4.2 innings and allowed 8 earned runs to take the loss.
Brenau (22-7 overall, 11-3 AAC) next hosts Union (Ky.) College (5-15 overall, 3-9 AAC) in an Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader on Friday.
