Gainesville, Ga.- The Brenau soccer team held off a late surge to defeat Dalton State (Ga.) College 2-1 in an NAIA non-conference matchup on Monday.
The Golden Tigers started aggressively as sophomore forward Madison Kitson notched her first goal of the season at the 15:47 mark in the first half for an early 1-0 lead. Both squads battled throughout the remainder of the period as the visiting Roadrunners held a slight 10-7 shots on goal advantage.
In the 60th minute Brenau again found its momentum as senior Sophia Schweizer beat Roadrunner keeper Maggie Rickard to give the home team a 2-0 lead. However, Dalton State answered less than ten minutes later as Lexi Lyson answered to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Golden Tiger defense held fast for the remaining 21 minutes and keeper Zyara Gonzalez-Galeano notched a total of 16 saves to hold off the late rally to earn the squad's second win of the early season.
The team rides a two-match winning streak into AAC play after defeating Toccoa Falls (Ga.) College 5-0 on Saturday.
Brenau (2-1 overall, 0-0 AAC) hopes to ride the momentum into next week's AAC opener as the team travels to take on Columbia International (SC) University (1-1 overall, 0-0 AAC) at 7 pm on Saturday.
